Frequently Asked Questions

1What is composite bonding?
Composite bonding involves applying a tooth-colored resin material directly to the surface of the teeth. The material is then shaped and molded to create the desired appearance. This procedure is typically used to correct minor cosmetic issues such as chipped or cracked teeth, gaps between teeth, or irregular shapes and sizes of teeth. Composite bonding is a relatively quick and non-expensive procedure compared to porcelain veneers. However, the bonding material is not as durable as porcelain, and may chip or stain over time.
2What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth. Veneers are typically made from porcelain, which is a strong and durable material that closely resembles the appearance of natural teeth. Veneers can be used to correct a wide range of cosmetic issues including chipped or broken teeth, severe tooth discoloration, uneven or misaligned teeth, and gaps between teeth. Porcelain veneers are known for their natural appearance and long-lasting results. However, they are more expensive and require extra time for fabrication and placement compared to composite bonding.
3How often should I receive cleanings while having veneers?
We recommend 3 cleanings per year to help maintain veneers. These appointments also act as our opportunity to educate you on certain aspects, such as where you may need to clean better to help avoid problems.
4How long do veneers last?
Porcelain veneers can last 5-15 years depending on how well they are maintained. There are a number of questions to call to mind: Are you wearing the night guard every night as directed? Are you attending your cleaning appointments? Are you prone to cavities? We help you understand your oral health and possible issues so that you can avoid problems and maintain your smile for a very long time! However, each patient is different and longevity is related to eating habits and how carefully the patient maintains the teeth after they are cemented.
5How much do you shave the teeth for veneers?
Dr. Balaes offers a minimally invasive approach to all of his work, including porcelain veneers. If you are having no prep, no shave veneers, then no preparation is necessary for the teeth (unless you have sharp corners or edges that need to be smoothed). If you are having porcelain veneers, then we need to make a thin margin around the gum line and smooth off any sharp corners prior to the impression. Regardless of what procedure you are having done, Dr. Balaes is known for his minimally invasive techniques and understands our patients want to maintain their enamel as much as possible.
